The Written Zoo

According to Seasame Street it's Cookie Monster's birthday today!

Yes, I'm doing NaNoWriMo again this year. I'm tackling non-fiction this year, which seemed like a good idea at the time (when I came up with the idea and outline several months back). The idea has been percolating, but now that November is finally here, I'm wondering how successful I'll be. I'm writing about games and gaming, somewhat autobiographically, with character stories and a little bit of gaming knowledge and research. It's about all types of gaming (except I suppose, gambling) and geekery. I'm not really doing this FOR anything, though I think once I get it all out of my head, I might be able to make something of it. Order is going to play a big part of that though, which I'm trying not to think about too much.

I decided since I've already outlined the thing (though topics are subject to change) that I would give Scrivener's Windows beta a shot. I've heard nothing but good things about the program from Mac users, and since they're offering a half-off deal for NaNo winners, it seems like a good idea.

When you pair that with the new site I found (www.Zoho.com) for writing online (it's like Google Docs, but better), I'm pretty prepared across the board. I stumbled across Zoho when looking for a way to write online since work seems to be blocking Google Docs these days. Zoho let me import documents from Google Docs, so I was able to get working pretty quickly, and now can keep notes and share documents better than before. It's not as universal (as far as being able to share - Google is better for most friends), so I'm still using both sites. I mean, ideally, I'm perfectly happy with Google Docs, but I'll admit that Zoho outshines it in a lot of ways. The editor for documents is better, and the integration between programs (like email, calendar, documents) is better. I definitely recommend checking it out.

I got things set up in Scrivener last night, and today, staring at a regular blank editor, I find myself missing the sort of order I have in Scrivener.

I think, I might drop out of inception_bang. I have an outline, but pre-NaNo I only had a few hundred words, and I'm not sure how far I'm going to get in November. While I'm theoretically capable of churning out 15k words in a few short days before rough drafts are do in December, I don't know that they'd be 15k words worth reading. I'm going to try and get through this week's NaNo writing and see where I stand then.

One of the hardest things to think about is that November is currently huge for new games too. So, I'm playing Fable III right now (well, I mean not at this moment, but I've been playing it steadily for the last week). The Kinect for the Xbox 360 comes out this week, which I'm excited about playing with. Then Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood will be out on the 16th. Not too mention all the other things I have to do for GA - like reviewing The Sims 3: Late Night expansion. Totally doable, provided I crack down on where I'm spending time. If my heart isn't into the inception_bang by next week, I'll drop it so i can focus elsewhere.

Matt and I celebrated 5 years together yesterday. We spent Sunday afternoon at the Topeka Zoo as sort of celebration of both his birthday and our anniversary. It's not ideal - we're planning an out of town weekend away for later, but it was nice. I took a ton of pictures at the Zoo, which is my custom, and will put them up on Flickr later this week. They had a Bobcat, a Mountain Lion, Sumantran Tigers, a Black Leopard and African Lions. My big cat quota was filled and then some. There were also sleepy Black Bears, an African and an Asian Elephant (they swayed together in some sort of wind dance - I took video), and a very rambunctious little Orangutan girl. It's a pretty small zoo, but it's worth the visit, if you're like me and like hanging out close to the animals (I talk to them. Seriously.)
