Books, Zombies and Writing

So, tonight is the third Lit. Angels podcast. We've been getting a lot of positive feedback thus far, so I'm looking forward to seeing how many people we get listening in, or joining the chat room. I'm more excited for the next podcast - which is going to be about ZOMBIES!!! Steph and I picked two random books from Amazon to read specifically for the podcast: Zen of a Zombie: Better Living Through the Undead which is hilarious so far, and History is Dead: A Zombie Anthology, which has been interesting but far less entertaining than I was hoping. That podcast will be April 2nd, to give people a chance to pick up one or both of the books and read along with us. At some point very soon, we're also going to do a special edition podcast and talk about the new book about Columbine that comes out in April.

I read an interesting post from VSL:Science a week or so ago that talks about how people can better their emotions by writing for small periods every day. According to research done at the University of Missouri, people benefit to writing about something emotionally significant to them, if they do it every day for at least 2 minutes. The research was done as a follow-up on a theory 20 some years ago that 15 minutes of writing would result in a similar effect: elevated mood, lower blood pressure, better grades. You can read the full study results from the University of Missouri here. Their methodology and results are pretty interesting. The positive things people wrote about were widely varied, and the people didn't write about the same subject on multiple days. But negative items were usually similar and people tended to linger on them the second day. The authors also postulate that the people involved most-likely didn't stop thinking about the item once the 2 minutes was over; that most likely they thought about and continued to share that experience throughout the remainder of the day. Makes me wonder if people could use small social media items like Facebook or Twitter statuses to achieve the same sort of thing. Thinking for two minutes about 140 words of positive life experiences could provide some benefit.

The next Lit Angels is on Zombies? That's amazing! I so have to make sure I can come listen. I feel bad I haven't caught one yet, but my mom likes using my computer at night. Oh, the Zombie Survival Handbook and World War Z are supposed to be really good, too. Mm, perfect podcast for a pre-birthday celebration.

Yup. I posted about it in the forums a while back, we talked about the books we'll be reading in last night's podcast a bit too. ;)
