Hello Universe

Sometimes, even when you don't think people like you, they surprise you.

Monday, this guy that I used to work with, who got laid off in May, called me. He recently got a job and had been called about a second job that fit the work he and I are used to. He called me to ask if it was something I'd be interesting in, and if he could forward my information on to the guy about the job. Of course, I said yes.

Tuesday afternoon, I went in to talk to the contracting company - just a meet and greet sort of thing. Wednesday morning I had an interview for the job and then during the interview the woman pretty much said, I was hired. Now, she wanted me to start on Monday, but there's some sort of hold up with HR (isn't there always?) and it might be Wednesday or Thursday before I start the job.

But, this is amazing you guys. I can't even... I was always friendly with this ex co-worker, but I wouldn't have called him a friend. And in the same situation, I don't know that I would've done the same thing for him. Maybe I would've, I don't know. But, that he thought of me, and I got this job - it's a three month contract that they want to turn into a full-time employee position by January - and so QUICKLY... it's pretty amazing. I've just been flabbergasted by the whole thing.

But, typically, this is the way I've gotten my jobs. Nothing forever, and then when something comes along, it just happens fast.

Anyway. Today's my last day at my old job. I'm at home doing nothing, because there's not actually work for me to do. I'll go in around 2 this afternoon to turn in my laptop and badge, and clean out my desk. But, I'm not really sad about it. I've been there 7 years, and almost everyone is going away. I've been told it doesn't matter how badly they're going to need me in the coming months, they're not in a place to spend time trying to keep me. That's a pretty good indicator of their level of interest. Most of my friends have gone in previous layoff rounds, so there's little for me there aside from the fact that I like what I do.

My new job will be the same type of work, a little less responsibility and a little more pay. Sounds good to me - even if it's only really good for three months and it doesn't get extended. The only thing I worry about is going from a flexible work-at-home schedule to a full five day a week schedule in an office. The way my sleep habits have been the last year and a half or so, don't give me a lot of confidence, but I'll have to try it. And if it's only for three months, I can make it through that. If it's more, hopefully, I'll learn to adjust.
