Could've been so much worse

Very tired. I'm on pain meds for what was almost a broken foot and it's messing with my sleep quite a bit. I'm trying to stay awake this morning but I feel a strong need for a nap.

So, if you didn't see via Twitter or Facebook, I nearly broke my foot coming back from PAX East. I was leaving the hotel (the very nice and supposedly haunted Omni Parker House Hotel) to get a taxi to the airport Sunday afternoon when it happened. My luggage and I had a disagreement on the like 5 stairs down to the door and I slipped down the last two steps and landed with my right foot turned over and underneath me. There was a nice lady that helped me up and at the time, I thought I was fine and that it was just a small sprain.

I rode the taxi to the airport (even talked to my mom on the phone) and it seemed a little sore, but fine. Made it through security (without having to go through the porno scan. I must've looked pathetic enough waiting in line for the backscatter machine, or something, but the security people waved me through the metal detector instead (thank you random TSA agents for that). Maybe it was just luck or chance, or maybe they noticed my limp, don't know, but I appreciate getting to skip the scan all the same.

I sat down to have some dinner at the restaurant across from my gate and that's when the pain really kicked in. I tried to keep my foot propped up while I ate and it seemed like it might be fine. But, as soon as I stood, it was obvious it was getting worse. I limped badly to the bathroom and exited just in time for them to call for early boarding. I opted to try to board early because I knew it was going to take me a while to limp down the jetway. Thankfully, that was easy enough, though by the time I made it to the plane, I was in tears from the pain. I asked the flight attendant for a bag of ice for my foot and they were nice enough to find a way for me to keep my foot on ice for the flight.

Matt took me to the doctor Monday morning and the doctor suspected it was either broken, or that I'd torn a tendon, or just sprained it really badly. Hard to tell really, it was swollen, but not bruised and I had limited range of motion with it from both pain and injury. The doctor wrote me a pain med prescription, one for crutches and a boot, and a note for work, just in case. I got the x-rays and they didn't show a break/fracture, so we're down to possible torn tendon or really bad sprain. I go back next week and based on the amount of healing that happens between now and then, we'll know better.

For now, I've got some borrowed crutches from my dad (which I'm absolutely pants at using), a crazy weird sandal/shoe thing, and pain meds that I don't think do much other than make me sleepy.

And no new news on the adoption front. :(

I've got my fingers crossed for you that you'll feel better soon and that you'll hear good news on the adoption front soon. :)

I hope you feel better and get more definite news on the foot situation. And hopefully you'll get good news on the adoption front soon!

Sounds like the really ugly sprain I got at my senior graduation lock-in back in high school. There are people whose last memory of me is of me rolling around on the floor screaming in pain! I was on crutches for a week with that.

That was awesome of the flight attendants to take care of you like that, and of the TSA agents to let you through without a big fuss. You hear nothing but negative things about air travel these days. It's nice to hear something positive.

So, I added you from the swooping meme...and couldn't help but snicker when I saw you're from KC since that's where I was born and raised. I'm currently a TX transplant, but I'm hoping to move back home maybe as soon as this fall.

And honestly? I don't know how you managed that flight with your foot hurting that bad. Hopefully it'll heal quickly for you!!

Hello! Stupid LJ didn't send me your comment. :(

Well, thanks to the nice flight attendants and the ice, my foot was pretty numb for most of the flight. So it wasn't necessarily painful, just annoying. It was getting on and off the plane however that kicked my ass.
