Weird Memories

Do you something, that every time you do it, you're reminded of something? Okay, that may not be a clear question. But here's my example.

It's something mundane, like opening my car door. Every time I open my car door, I have to take a moment. I gauge the distance between the car next to me, and open the door slowly. Why? Because once, many years ago, as a poor college student this happened: I was at 7-11 putting gas in my car. I'm almost done, and getting back into my car when the lady in the SUV next to me scrambles over to me, and yells for me to stop. I do. She tells me that I hit her car with my door. She shows me the scratch mark I left behind. We talk for a moment, and I offer to give her my insurance information. I sit down in my drivers seat, and lean over to get my insurance information out of my glovebox, while she continues talking to me about how she felt the impact while she filled her gas tank. Whatever. So, I'm going through the papers from my glovebox, and I notice something. While she's talking, she's opened the door to my car a little wider than it was before. I get up from my seat, and push against the door...it's open all the way. With many many inches left of space between her car in mine. She's still talking, and I motion for her to stop. I politely point out the space between my door and her car, and that I couldn't have possibly hit her. She pushes against the open door, testing it. No luck for her. We part ways, we me vaguely mystified at the gall of some middle-aged housewife.

So now, even today, and every day when I open my car door that scene flashes in my head. I have to look, make sure I have space. And if I don't I make sure I don't hit the car. I don't want it happening again. It's not a traumatic incident, but I'll never forget it as long as I'm driving.

Anyone else have weird memories like that?

OMG, sounds like she was trying to scam your insurance company... I've heard of other people who've had things like that happen. glad you caught it before you actually gave her any info.

hehe... i was just talking to krys the other day about how every time the red hot chili peppers' song "aeroplane" comes on, i am always snapped back to the 7th grade. i'm sitting in my lit class taking a test i didn't study for, and it's way too hot because they turned the heaters on too early and this guy (jake somethingorother) is singing the one line over and over again behind me... "music is my aeroplane... hm hm hm hm hm ... music is my aeroplane..."

i don't know WHY i remember that, but i can't hear the song without hearing his voice and feeling mildly uncomfortable.

Boy, I'm glad you cottoned on to that scam before you gave the woman your ins info. Could have been ugly.

Yeah, so was I. I've always figured that she probably had dinged someone else earlier in the day, and was trying to figure out a way to get it fixed without paying for it.

I can't think of anything right off hand. I just had to comment and tell you that your story made me feel really good. I love to hear when someone is trying to pull some scummy crap like what that woman was doing and they get busted for it. It was so cool that you noticed the clearance between your door and her car. That revelation read like something from a murder mystery where the culprit is revealed by the deductive skills of the astute detective. You made me feel good with that one!
