Book Review: The Virgin's Lover

I haven't posted any book reviews in a while.  And it's not for lack of reading.  However, I started Love in the Time of Cholera and put it down to read The Virgin's Lover by Phillipa Gregory.  It was the last of the Tudor story trilogy she did, and I couldn't help myself.  It taunted me, and I wanted badly to finish what I'd started.  I'm disappointed though.  The first two were such great glimpses at that time, and of those people.  The Other Boleyn Girl I absolutely adored!  My love for all things Queen Elizabeth definitely made my interest in The Virgin's Lover all the stronger.  I was really hoping she could do for Elizabeth what she did for her mother.  I was wrong.  It's well written, but where Elizabeth is strong in The Queen's Fool she's a weak-willed, foolish, love-stricken girl in The Virgin's Lover.  Her affair with Dudley is the main theme of course, but there's never a mention really to her "virgin" status, or her final comment of having no master.  I expected this little girl attitude from Dudley's wife Amy, but not from Elizabeth.  So I was disappointed.  And based on some of the reviews I've read, I'm not the only one.

Why didn't I finish Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez?  It's boring.  So boring.  And being translated to English from Spanish isn't doing it any favors.  If my Spanish was better I'd track down a copy of it and try it, but I don't think that'll happen.  I may get back to it at some point, it does look like it may pick up, but I'm not going to be in any hurry.

If you're keeping track, which I know you're not...that's the third book I've picked up and put down without finishing this year.  I'm not proud of that, I like to finish books, but eh, they bored me.  Wildacre, I know I will definitely get back too.  The other two, I'm not so sure about.

I need a better icon for books.  Xander is funny...but old.

Hmmm, Love in the Time of Cholera has been on my list of books to read for a while, but just haven't gotten to it yet. I've heard it's one that takes some work to get into but once you are in, you're in!
